Culture Corner: The Power of Appreciation

If you’ve ever felt unappreciated, you know the impact it can have. But have you ever stopped to think about how you share appreciation with others?

Today we want to challenge you, no matter what your position is within the company, take time and share genuine appreciation with someone.

A simple quote speaks volumes, “A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected.”

At the end of the day, we all want to feel valued and appreciated, it goes hand in hand with being respected and when that happens, we naturally want to help the other person, even if it means going above and beyond. Things that take intention but don’t have to cost a lot.

A heartfelt THANK YOU — it can be a card, words, maybe a sticky note, sharing your sincere gratitude with someone who did something positive is a win-win. Bonus, you can always add their favorite candy, coffee, flowers or a gift card to the note.

Compliment someone – research shows receiving a compliment makes your brain react similar to being given a monetary award. Make sure you are specific and sincere for the biggest impact.

Listen — have a conversation and truly listen with care and compassion, it not only makes the other personfeel valued it deepens your connection.

Help out — whether it’s a co-worker or significant other offering to help with a project, pick up the kids or stop at the store helps them feel appreciated.

What about delivering a home-cooked meal to a friend who you know has had a crazy week?

If you are not sure how to put your appreciation in to words, remember to keep it simple, be sincere and include what they did, “I cannot thank you enough for stepping up and helping me finish the project, we wouldn’t have made the deadline without you.”

One final and probably the easiest way to help someone feel valued and appreciated is to return the favor, jump in and help them out in their time of need. Nothing expresses you matter, like lending a hand.
