Position Summary:

Utility Locators are responsible for pinpointing the paths of cables, pipes and other conduits that carry utilities underground.? The locators’ efforts protect underground utilities from damage during projects involving excavation.

Primary Position Duties:

  • Identify and map location and depth of utilities such as water, sewer, gas, cable, oil and electric lines.
  • Document interactions, site information and utilities in organizational software.
  • Communicate with clients, engineers, and management.
  • Use a variety of techniques (electrical, magnetic, GPS, blueprint analysis, and/or radar) to measure utilities.

Working Conditions:

  • The employee will primarily work in the field.
  • The job requires working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, fluctuating temperatures, and periodic high noise levels may occur.

Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to ride in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites.
  • Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Stand, talk, and hear frequently.

Travel:

  • Travel to other project sites in different states may be required to assist with new project start-ups.
  • Travel may be for up to a 14-day period

Education or Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.Strong attention to detail.
  • Passion for accuracy.
  • Self-motivated and able to work alone.
  • Strong communication skills with the general public.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
  • On-the-job training offered.
  • Class E Valid Driver’s License required.
